Vira Jatayu-Protector of Women

Jatayu, a noble vulture king in Valmiki's Ramayana, plays a crucial role in the epic, symbolizing unwavering loyalty and sacrifice. He was a friend of King Dasharatha, Rama’s father, and his compassion extended to Rama and Sita. When Sita was abducted by Ravana, Jatayu witnessed the incident and immediately sprang into action, determined to save her. Despite his advanced age, Jatayu courageously confronted Ravana in the sky, attempting to rescue Sita from the demon king’s clutches. With his sharp talons and powerful wings, Jatayu attacked Ravana, causing great distress to the powerful asura. However, Ravana, wielding his formidable strength and weapons, soon overpowered the aging bird. In a fierce battle, Ravana severed Jatayu's wings, leaving him gravely wounded. Jatayu’s valiant effort was not enough to stop Sita's abduction, but his bravery delayed Ravana’s progress. After Ravana escaped with Sita, Jatayu lay mortally wounded until Lord Rama and Lakshmana, searching for Sita, found him. Despite his severe injuries, Jatayu informed Rama about Sita's abduction and the direction in which Ravana fled. Touched by Jatayu’s devotion and sacrifice, Rama embraced him as if he were his own father and performed his last rites, ensuring Jatayu’s soul attained moksha (liberation). Jatayu’s fight with Ravana and his union with Rama underscore his heroic devotion, selflessness, and willingness to sacrifice everything for dharma. His character serves as an enduring symbol of loyalty, courage, and the ultimate sacrifice for a noble cause. Jatayu is the most important deity here after Rama and the Jatayu pooja here is the Hindu way of looking at women in community-with respect and devotion.in honour of the aviary species Pakshipanthi OOttu is done here daily along with the Vanara Ottu daily.
